Brijuni (Brioni) consists of more than twelve most beautiful small islands in the Croatian part of the northern Adriatic Sea and finds itself being separated from the west coast of the Istrian peninsula by the narrow Fažana Strait. The largest island, Veli Brijun (5.6 km²), lies 2 km off the coast and is much appreciated for its scenic natural beauty and became an holiday resort and Croatian National Park since 1983.
After the second world war Brijuni became part of Yugoslavia and communist state leader Josip Broz Tito made Brijuni Islands his personal State Summer Residence. Many foreign heads of state visited Tito on his islands, including famous American and Italian film stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren, Carlo Ponti, and Gina Lollobrigida.
